What an uncertain time it’s been these last few weeks. Has the recent unfolding of COVID-19 found you in panic mode? Are you scared or stressing about the future? If you’ve been concerned about how this season has or will impact your family, you’re not alone.
It’s very likely some of us have lost our jobs or cut back on hours during this time. Maybe you personally have been laid off because of this pandemic, or know someone who has. You might be asking, “Where do we turn? What can we do? How long will this last?”
First off, don’t panic. Pray and trust God. Get into His Word and soak in His truth. Recognize He is in control, even when our finances are not. He is the provider and sustainer. He is the Good Shepherd who cares for us. You are never alone. God promises in Isaiah 41:10:
“Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
Do you believe He is with you as you walk through this valley? Do you rely on His power to get you through financial hardship? In my own experience, I’ve found it really hard to rely on God when I’m relying on myself to make ends meet. When we are struggling living paycheck to paycheck, he fills in the gaps. He shows up and pours His blessing over us. In Ecclesiastes 7:14, we are reminded of this:
“Enjoy prosperity while you can, but when hard times strike, realize both come from God. Remember that nothing is certain in this life.”
Ask Him to fulfill your needs and make a way for you to get through this. Remember that even in our suffering, He hears us and loves to provide for us.
Make a plan. So does that mean we just sit idly by in hopelessness? Absolutely not. Assess your situation with a level head so you can figure out your next steps. If you currently don’t have a budget, stop reading right now and create one. If you need a starting point, use my template here. I’ve also compiled a list of some great budgeting software, apps, and other tools you can check out here.
If you don’t have an emergency fund or any savings to rely on, building a budget is a must. You need a clear view of your financial picture so you know how to move forward.
Do what you can. Luckily, there are still several companies hiring right now. Find work in your area to cover your basic expenses and keep you afloat. This is not a time to search for your dream job. Sites like Glassdoor and Indeed are great places to search for open positions. If you’re looking for flexible or remote work, you may want to check out FlexJobs. Put forth the effort and see what comes of it.
Reach out. With all the social distancing protocols in place, it might be tempting to avoid connection altogether. If you are struggling, connect with your family, your church, and/or your community. There are people out there who love to help, serve and give. If you are truly in a financial bind, ask for help! God uses people to share in each other’s burdens.
Spread generosity, not germs. We are all in this together, and as Christ-followers, we are called to help our brothers and sisters in need. Maybe you have the means to give to someone in need. If God is prompting you to help someone in need, don’t ignore it! There have been many times in my life I have felt this nudge and took action. When I follow through, the blessings are evident. I have felt more enriched, joyful and thankful for what He’s given me because of it.
His Spirit leads us to give out of obedience, not obligation. In Luke 6:38, it says,
“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
Final Encouragement. God knows what He’s doing. He’s good at being God. Yes, it’s easy to doubt when the view is foggy and there are so many unknowns. But we have a choice. Will we exercise faith in His good plan and trust Him, or follow the path of our own fears?
“Be still and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”
Psalm 46:10
